Pilates, a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, focuses on the core postural muscles that provide support for the spine. The specific movements of Pilates are designed to stretch and strengthen without adding bulk resulting in toned, elongated muscles and improved posture. Focusing on the whole body rather than on individual body parts, pilates exercises increase flexibility and coordination while creating balance through correct alignment and use of muscles. Resistance is provided by springs that offer resilience to the movements as well as support. This allows for smooth and controlled movements that develop a sense of power and stability throughout the skeleton.
